Making Ice Cream!

Mrs Paver was in the other day and she made Ice cream with our class- yum!!

Here's her recipe:
1 breakfast cup salt.
120mils milk blue top.
2 dessertspoons sugar
1tsp vanilla essence
clip lock bags  1 small
                      1 large
crushed ice 1 cup.
Shake the bags sitting in an ice cream container  in case  there is a spill  !!!
You don't have to shake the bags too hard, only takes about 5 mins.

Thanks Mrs Paver! This will be fun to try at home!

Why does ice cream melt so fast? Check out the answer on the Suzy's World website

Phytosynthesis

Bubbles shown on leaf swimming in a jar of water
Photosynthesis is a cycle.  Plants breathe in Carbon Dioxide (CO) and they breathe out Oxygen (O2). I know plants breathe out Oxygen because I observed a leaf in a jar of water with bubbles. We breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Every 2nd breath you take comes from the ocean. The plants in the ocean are really tiny and they are called Phytoplankton.                        by Riley

UV Beads

Did you know that our skin is an excellent detector of ultraviolet (UV) radiation?
When bare skin is exposed to the sun, it will either turn red (sunburn) or brown (suntan). This happens because the skin shows that it is being "attacked" by UV  radiation. UV radiation wavelengths are short enough to break chemical bonds in your skin tissue and over prolonged exposure, your skin may wrinkle or skin cancer may appear.
We got some UV beads to detect UV. (A much safer way to see UV in action!) These plastic beads contain a chemical which changes colour when exposed to UV radiation. It was amazing how quickly they changed colour outside - even on a cloudy day.

We put some beads in 2 plastic bags and smothered one of these bags in sunscreen. We left the other bag clear. We then took both bags outside. The one covered in sunscreen stayed a pale colour, whereas the other bag of beads changed colour really quickly.

These beads change back to white when away from the UV radiation.

If you are interested in purchasing some for yourselves , the beads can be purchased from here.

How to blow a bubble!

Room 4 have been working so hard that we had a treat today in Writing Time. Everyone got given a piece of bubblegum and had fun blowing bubbles.
We then talked about how to make a good bubble and wrote the instructions of how to do so.

Visiting the Public Library - newly renovated.

We were invited to go and check out the newly renovated Mervyn Kemp Library. Earthquake strengthening has happened throughout- bracing the ceilings and walls.
Another neat new thing is that the kids area has moved to an area that has a lot more space - very cool!

Have a look at the kids' pages of the Wellington City Library website.

When you do a lot of reading over the holidays, why not write a book review and enter it into the Kid's Club Reviews.

You’ll receive a prize after your first 2 reviews and then every 5th review after that. So what are you waiting for? To get the prizes you must have your own library card (don’t forget to type your card number into the box below). There are spot prizes for really excellent and thoughtful reviews too!
